TRAVEL GUIDE LEGEND

Facilities and Amenities

It goes without saying that a riding location is only as good as it’s local cafe. Well it’s certainly a pretty important aspect when choosing a riding spot or trail centre. With many locations having a range of facilities available we wanted to make it easy to see what’s at the trail head (or reasonable close).

These icons should make life easy when working through our Travel Guides - if you see it then you’ll be well covered for your days riding whether it’s an uplift, showers, toilets, parking or even a bike wash.

  • Local Guide

We believe that local insight is key to unlocking the most from your visit. Our travel guides seek to bring a different perspective to your visit so you can get the most out of your time.

  • Trail Guide

There’s a lot of trails out and places to explore. Keep an eye our for this symbol for more info on the trails.

  • LOCATION

Find out where you need to go to find your next adventure.

  • CAFE

What good day out doesn’t end (or even start) with a coffee and cake stop. We give you the insight into places to eat and refuel while you’re out there on the trails.

  • BIKE SHOP

Some riding centres will have a on site bike shop but there’s often other options which we hope we can direct you to.

  • W/C and Showers

We’ve always valued knowing whether there’s toilets and/or showers on site or nearby. We hope to let you know so if you see this symbol you’ll know there’s some basic facilities available..whether they’re open is another matter.

  • PARKING

Most of our travel guides will be in places where parking is available but on occasions a little more insight and direction is needed. We’ll try and have you covered either way.

  • BIKE WASH

Bike wash facilities are becoming ever popular. If we know this is available then we’ll include it on our key. There’s nothing better than returning home with a clean bike.

  • HOW TO GET THERE

With a continued focus on reducing our carbon emissions and travel impact we provide you details on the best routes to reach your destination.

  • UPLIFT - BUS AND TRAILER

There’s more and more options appearing for uplifted riding. If you’re looking to make your life a little easier then keep an eye out for this symbol.

  • UPLIFT - GONDOLA

There’s only a few places with the luxury of a chairlift or gondola but were certainly big fans of this speedy route to the top.

  • ACCOMMODATION

Thankfully there’s more and more options out there for bike friendly accommodation and we hope to direct you to the best out there.

TRAILS AND GRADING

There’s numerous trail grading systems out there so we’ve tried to create one that meets the modern trails without getting too granular. Places like Bike Park Wales have their own systems which we think are great but we’ve opted for the British Cycling Trail Grading and expanded on the Orange grading to reflect the range of bike park trails which are now out there.

  • PUMP TRACK

We’re HUGE fans of pump tracks and you’ll find more and more of these around the UK. Some riding venues also have them too.

  • GREEN TRAIL

Perfect for beginner and novice riders. The trails are relatively flat and wide but expect some loose and unevent surfaces. The climbs and descents are shallow without features and can be tackled by most. We won't be covering too many Greens here but they're great for starting out.

  • BLUE TRAIL

For the beginner to intermediate mountain biker with some offroad skills. We'd recommend a hardtail upwards for blues and these trails will have small features and more gradient. Some of our favourite trails are blues with rollers and berms common, some small Technical Trail Features (TTF) likely.

  • RED TRAIL

For your intermediate to advanced mountain biker. A good quality mountain bike is recommended, if not essential. You'll be comfortable on blues and ready to take on steeper single track with roots, off camber, steps and rocks. This is when a higher level of fitness can be hugely beneficial. Climbs will be steeper and descents will push you skills.

  • BLACK TRAIL

For the expert mountain bikers out there who'd been riding for a good number of years and can take on physically demanding trails. Think full suspension enduro or trail bike for these. There will be some unavoidable TTF's and with steep ascents or descents over a prolonged length. Put all that practice into action and enjoy the challenge and variable terrain.

  • ORANGE - BLUE TRAIL

Bike Park trails are finding their niche now and these tend to focus on berms and jumps with longs of features built in. Expect this trail to have plenty of table tops and rollers to work on your jumping. There's also likely to be some smaller drops to contend with. You'll be confortable riding Blue trails before stepping up to this level.

  • ORANGE - RED TRAIL

Suitable for your intermediate to advanced rider who's comfortable on a red but looking to take on larger table tops, doubles and non rollable drops.

  • ORANGE - BLACK DIAMOND TRAIL

Expect larger doubles and drops with more TTF build into the trail. This levels for expert riders who are comfortable hitting large jumps. It's good to build up to hitting all the features on these trails and sighting them before you roll in.

  • ORANGE - DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND TRAIL

For Expert and Pros you should expect some highly challenging features with large doubles, table tops and drops. Take offs will be large and you should expect varied features mixed in. This level of trail should be assessed carefully by all riders.
